This DVD is an overview of recreational UTD/Hogarthian/DIR skills and is available to all divers, either taking a UTD/Hogarthian/DIR oriented class, or generally interested in improving their open water recreational diving skills. The primary component of the DVD is the presentation of open water diving skills that provide a foundation for your diving career. As this is a DVD designed for recreational divers, the skills are demonstrated in a single tank with a general overview of key points. (if you are seeking a more technically oriented DVD then you will want the Essentials of Tech DVD). Essentials of Recreational Diving Skills included: Trim/Buoyancy Modified Flutter Kick Frog Kick Backward Kick Helicopter Turn Basic 6 - Regulator & Mask Skills Valve Drills S-Drills (Out Of Air) Ascent Drills (including Safety Decompression Stops) Some Bonus Skills: Deploying a Surface Marker Buoy Toxing Diver Recovery Out of Air Ascents **Click highlighted skills to view sample of skill video's. While certainly not the only skills required for safe diving, these skills form the nucleus for the Essentials of Recreational Diving class, and represent the core UTD/Hogarthian/DIR skills for the Essentials of Recreational Diving recreational diver. Each skill is represented in a complete and uninterrupted format showing the skill being performed. Reviewing these clips over and over is an excellent way to preview the skills prior to your class. Your instructor will also reference these video's during your class and you can then review these skills following the course. The DVD is easy to use and each skill can be accessed independently through menus. In addition, bonus tracks have been included to provide a sneak peek at some of the more advanced topics we cover in the more advanced DVD's in this series (Essentials of Tech, Essentials of Overhead Diving, Technical Diving). As these bonus skills involve a greater mastery of the core skills, they are included as a useful "signpost" to where you may want to take your personal and team skills. Reviewing the video prior to attending the class will help the student begin to solidify the concepts ahead of time, allowing the formulation of educated questions. After the course, having the videos means you can always revisit the skills and continue to learn as your understanding grows. What a waste
These videos (the UTD openwater and UTD 5-DX essentials of recreational diving (Yeah, really sorry I rented 2 at the same time- live and learn), are just video of a guy floating at the bottom of the ocean, loosely demonstrating maneuvers. There is absolutely no helpful narration whatsoever to let you know the intricacies of what he is doing and why and how various different maneuvers will help in different situations, etc. There is virtually nothing of substance or help here. Occasionally a pause with some cryptic 2-3 word subtitles is the most you'll get. Chances are if you're an advanced enough diver to figure out what is going on, you don't need it. Both videos are also punctuated with an awful soundtrack that loops about every 30 seconds and NEVER stops. If you must watch to find out for yourself, do yourself a favor and put it on mute. You won't miss a word. There are none.Note: I think the better reviews must be those that know the makers or are the makers themselves. The man's name was never mentioned in the video - it has no opening or closing credits nor is mentioned in the description or specs. So really the only way to know it is to know who made it. Or have some amazing psychic ability.

Instuctional DVD
This dvd is excellent if used for what it is intended, Support material for a DIR class. Although it demonstrates amazing dive technique and gives a good idea of valuable skils, the only way it would be effective is whith direction from an instructor and the other material that belongs with it.If you are looking at getting this DVD here and are not taking a DIR course then look at getting either of the next two DVDs from 5thD-X.For example Intro to technical diving has all the same skills plus a few more and actually breaks them down a little better.Good dvd in context.

Excellent, excellent video series
Remember all the skills you were taught in your Beginning Open Water class? Well, forget them. THIS is the way that you should be diving. While the large agencies are content to turn out McDivers, once you're ready to progress to a level where diving becomes relatively effortless and truly fun ... you've come to the right place.
