Is the mounting flange removeable?

Yes. The flange allows you to mount the socket in any panel thickness by compressing the socket against the panel. With the backing nut and no flange it will mount in a panel 1-1/4" thick. 12vtechnology LLC

if i have a 15amp breaker what gauge wire do i use also is a 15amp breaker to high

I don't use any fuses I ran the old socket out because it was crap I put in this Marine one here and ran it straight through my console to the 12 volt battery because I hate changing fuses I have a lot of high amp and electric currents in the truck so this bypasses the fuse method and I would use 12 16 gauge wire whatever you want to use the lower the better.

The photos don't show the back of the item. What size openings are required in the panel to mount this item?

Judging from some of the answers here, your experience might vary, but it seems the only way to keep the socket from turning, other than compression (which might be sufficient) would be to drill a hole of approximately 1" and then widening it to 1-1/8" except at the flat spots. (See rear view, which now is shown.)
