Amerex B500 Fire Extinguisher, 5 lb. ABC Dry Chemical

I ordered this then cancelled it after reading other reviews. Did more research & ordered it again. I was super worried out the pin slipping out & it going off during shipment. It arrived perfect & pin was secured in place. Everyone needs a fire extinguisher in the home & we moved & needed a new one. Hopefully it will sit in the closet & we never have to use it but glad I purchased this one. I feel safer now when we use the wood fireplace. Be sure to order one & keep on hand for any fire emergency that could arise.

This fire extinguisher is high-quality and can function in an emergency, and it is made of quality construction steel. The pin has a retainer so you don’t lose it, and the gauge is easy to read. It was easy to install it on my wall with the bracket. It’s comfortable to hold and it looks good. The bright red can be seen easily in a fire and it’s big and can extinguish any fire you should be extinguishing.

If you are going to keep a fire extinguisher in your home this is the 'type' that you want. It has A, B and C qualifications. What this means is simple. For the majority of folks who in the panic and reaction to a fire in their homes do not have the seconds to process the type of fire they deal with this is the unit that makes such a decision moot. An A-B-C unit covers all your bases as it were. I am a son of an over 40 year firefighter who left the ranks as a retired commissioner. He concurs with my evaluation. That's good enough for me, hopefully you will follow suit for your families safety. One more item of note and an important one. Some of our wonderful new items utilize plastic components to save weight and also ease the manufacturing costs, weight and end consumer price. Wonderful for many products, not wonderful for an extinguisher. YOU want METAL, especially in the handle. There is NO comparison in this. You go and grab that plastic handled unit and apply pressure and it doesn't work or breaks, well . . . your mind can work as well as mine. One more important thing. This is a 5 lb. unit where most are 3 lbs. or less. It's pretty easy to decide. This is for my and my families safety, I am not going to "cheap out" on this item and truthfully, neither should you.

Needed it

I bought this in August and was going to put it in my F350. It was in the garage and a fire got started in the garage. Pull the pin, aimed the nozzle and squeezed the handle. In less than 4 seconds the fire was stopped. This thing has the power and is impressive. Now to get a new one

So this Amerex extinguisher is well made. Some people complained about the stickers being crooked (of all things!) but I will say, there are two things that bother me. First of all, the pin doesn’t stay in at all! The wire that keeps you from losing the pin is stiff and forces the pin out. I removed the pin from that wire so the pin stays in but there is no resistance when putting the pin into the handle. If you tipped the extinguisher to the side it would just fall out. Secondly, a wall mount bracket was included but NO screws or anchors were included. I’ll either have to look for screws around the house or drive to a store to get them. For $70 I’d expect screws and a pin that stays in place.

Not the sexiest thing to purchase as a gift. Definitely the most practical. If you are looking for a good safe extinguisher, this is 'firefighter approved.' Hope they never have to use it. Just glad to know they have it!!

Buy this model, it is built like a tank! It’s probably the model they put inside actual USA tanks! I bought a cheaper Kidde fire extinguisher and the Amerex just feels so much better made. The Amerex model is assembled in the USA as opposed to Mexico for the Kidde. The Amerex model is noticeably heavier (but still light) and has milled parts compares to mostly cast. I think the big red cylinder is made of steel as opposed to cheaper aluminum. If I drop the Kidde model i think it would dent the cylinder. If I drop the Amerex model I think it will dent the floor and this fire extinguisher won’t care. Also, it’s wall mount is better since you can pull the safety pin out while it is securely on the wall, giving a small or weaker person more leverage. Pay up for this and one day your kids will probably inherit it.

Good product to have on hand when needed, I mounted mine in truck back under tonneau cover. Video reccomended under your seat is best, knowing the destructive force of these compressed cylinders God forbid it should explode. Not under my seat! Installation was easy having bought the mounting bracket and attached to a sturdy body panel.

This fire extinguisher has protected my family, thankfully during only one occasion of a fire that was getting out of control in the kitchen. I’d strongly recommend this product to keep you and your loved ones safe. Operating it is a simple squeeze of the handle and out comes something that can put out a fire! 😊
