A terrific Clint Eastwood movie.

The parallels between the movies “Shane” (1953) and “Pale Rider” (1985) make it reasonable to consider “Pale Rider” a deliberately constructed variation on the theme of “Shane.” In both the plot elements and the characters, one can describe abstractly the character or plot element common to the two films, and concretely the differences between the appearance of that character or element in each film. Nine matching abstract plot elements, with different concrete realizations, and a dozen character correspondences make it clear the resemblance is not coincidental. Just a few of the major correspondences will be described here. Defining the overall economic conflict is the situation of a family whose existing large commercial interest in a territory is threatened by arrival of many newcomers establishing small holdings (placer miners vs. small mining claims corresponding to ranchers vs. small farmers). Minor harrassments escalate to ultimate major conflict. The overall emotional conflict is set when a stranger (Preacher corresponding to Shane), a gunman often not wearing a gun, appears in the lives of a man and woman and child among the newcomers. The sexual attraction between the stranger and the woman is acknowledged by all three adults and serves as a source of tension. For the variations in the concrete realizations, consider: In Pale Rider: The man and woman are courting. The child is a teen-aged girl, child of the woman by a previous marriage. The stranger appears first at the town dominated by the mine owner, LaHood. The sexual attraction between the stranger and the unmarried woman is acted upon. The teen-aged girl is sexually attracted to the stranger as well as hero-worshipping him. In Shane: The man and woman are married. The child is a six or seven year old boy, their child. The stranger appears first at the newcomers’ farm. The sexual attraction between the stranger and the married woman is not acted upon. The boy hero-worships the stranger. Other correspondences include: the boulder in the stream versus the stump in the back yard, both eliminated by hand; the good employee of the bad family (Richard Kiel versus Ben Johnson); the final showdown occurs in the town's general store.

Classic movie

Never saw a bad Eastwood movie. The guy's an icon. I rented it for free on Amazon prime.

I love the Clint Eastwood westerns that have a little of supernatural tied into it. A girl gives up a prayer after her dog is shot and before you know it a rider shows up at their mining camp and he is a Preacher, to boot. He begins teaching the bad guys some lessons in what bad behavior can do.

Mr. Eastwood and a horse, good guys and bad guys and strange unlikely story line, but overall a watchable western, that is dear to my heart indeed.

Excellent film and a great looking steelbook, the 4k transfer is amazing!

完全吹き替え版ではなかったのが玉に瑕ですが、それでも良かったです。現代の悪徳企業、即ちブラック企業を叩き潰すストーリーは、今を生きる私達の心に訴えるものがあります。これは是非、今の若い世代に見て欲しいです。
