This third edition of Mary Fulbrook's much-admired and popular introduction to German history provides a clear and informative guide to the twists and turns of the story of the German lands and peoples from the early middle ages to the present day. Crisply synthesising a vast array of historical material, Fulbrook explores the interrelationships between social, political and cultural factors in the light of scholarly controversies. Since the second edition in 2004, there have been important changes in Germany, Europe and the wider world. This new edition features a significantly expanded chapter on Germany since 1990, encapsulating recent and dramatic developments that have transformed Germany's character and international standing. This single-volume history of Germany offers broad and accessible coverage and provides a useful guide for students, general readers, travellers to Germany and anyone with an interest in German history. Big impact in a small package
The author, Mary Fulbrook, is a well-published historian, but this was my first "exposure" to her writing. I will read more! She writes very well, and has a gift for analysis and interpretation. The book is one of a series of concise histories.

My First History of Germany
This is an excellent book in that the author goes beyond the classic treatment of the behaviour of rulers and also incorporates the lives of the ordinary people. Her treatment of the recent history of Germany is clear and analytical. Highly enjoyable and highly recommended.

It covers the key points and provides perspective for each. In a word - concise.
The book does a good job of outlining the murky origins of the German lands.

Excellent Introduction
With such a complex and complicated history, I think that this book does an excellent job of allowing a person with a somewhat limited knowledge of German history to get a basic foothold on how Germany came to be what it is today.

Got a PROOF version
I got a PROOF version for a full price. It's really unpleasant to read with those markings all over the book.
