Explode The Code provides a sequential, systematic approach to phonics in which students blend sounds to build vocabulary and read words, phrases, sentences, and stories. I have been able to teach my mildly dyslexic daughter (now 5 years old) how to read using these books. We are now on book 4 and have been using them for just over a year. Prior to this, and even after using several other popular phonic reading methods, my daughter just could not make the link and blend letters into words, she could not even read and understand 'at' or 'cat' even after several attempts. But when I started using these books, the repetition and the general structure of the book somehow clicked with my daughter and she began to read. I am forever grateful! There are several exercises in these books that catch out typical dyslexic issues and helps the student to practice the correct patterns (I am a teacher, have worked with several dyslexic students and used to have mild dyslexic as a child that put me behind a couple of years and I can tell you its really hard to catch up with that initial delay, it takes a lot of determination and not every child will have that to overcome this disorder. Many teachers do not have the time or experience to work with dyslexic students and often a schools special ed teacher is overstretched, leaving a dyslexia student to keep falling further behind each year, so these books are very useful to help tutor your child and get them to a level of learning they might miss out on at school).

Looking back over the years--irreplaceable.
I have been using these books for 15ish years? Love them. Always do my due diligence on curriculum and cannot find anything better for decoding skills. Have had one child that needed some of the half books, and, others skip them. Had early and later readers, but, so far, all go to college early and do well. Good, solid program. Do not be discouraged if your child is struggling with reading, if your doctor has ruled out every issue. I have found that reading acquisition is like potty training or tooth eruption. There is an acceptable age range and it doesn't matter when you're grown when it happened. These books cover all the decoding skills very well, so you can be sure it isn't because there is an educational failure, if your child still isn't reading. I have also looked at the guidelines and skipped books for my developmentally ready readers when I knew they had the skills covered in that book. You know your child. Mine did worse when they had too much busy (easy) work. Maybe you do the half books, then, reading takes off, and you don't need them. Don't be afraid to use your judgment. Maybe you feel your child needs to do every book, just to be sure. I cannot say enough how easy it is to adjust the work to where the student is now, then adjust again for where they are later. Did I say I love this program? Check out the Get Ready for the Code, Get Set for the Code, and Go for the Code books, too, and, don't forget the teachers' guide. You'll need that to complete the all-important "following instructions" pages, which I can't recommend you skip, even though there are only a few. To me, it was worth the expense.

Definitely Worth the Buy!
My 5(soon to be 6) year old and My 7 year old are currently working on level 2 of this book. I started in level 2, because level 1 seemed a bit to easy for them. But so far my 5 year old enjoys this book. The lessons are short and take 10 minutes or less. Depending on how much time you guys take to do the lesson. 5 year old does multiple pages at a time, probably can get through a full lesson a day. That’s how much the assignments are understood. It’s not to much for the 5 yo because we’ve been practicing phonics with Jady A also so it’s a great reinforcement of what we’ve already learned. My 7 year old is more of a math whiz but a reader as well and this has been great in enhancing phonics skills too. 7 yo would prefer to do 1 or 2 pages vs an entire lesson at once Lol but it’s ok. It works out well for both of them! Reading is understandable for their age(to read on their own). They are able to complete lessons without me if need be. I think we’ll be starting the next book in No time because of their understanding. I feel like we’re on the right page! Highly recommend!

Good workbooks!
I cannot say enough good things about these books. Yes, they have some "silly nonsense" but 5yr olds love that "silly" stuff. We have been very happy with all the Explode the Code books and this one is no exception! After introducing a new phonic sound, etc my son can sit, follow the directions and practice independently. As some other people have said, I do agree that the pictures can be somewhat confusing and need some explanation. Multiple times a week (we do 2-3 of these worksheets a day) my children have to stop and ask what the pictures represent. I can see how that may be frustrating for struggling readers also. That is why I gave this 4 stars.
