**Q: is 12 inches long enough for an average baton?  And is it 12in including the handle?**
A: I've tried the 12, 14 and 16 inch batons.  I'm six feet tall and settled on the 16" as feeling the best in my hand.  The shorter ones were too light.

When you are five feet tall, a 15 inch conducting baton is unwieldy. This was the shortest one I could find, and I love it! The cork handle keeps it from slipping in your hand, and although it is shorter than most, is very visible to the choir or band.
