Yellow Mountain Imports Travel Magnetic Chess Set (9.8-Inch) - Folding and Portable Board Game

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my child. After using it all this time, I can say it has held up much better than I expected. At this price range, it does everything I expected and hasn't just fallen apart. Pros: - Silver and Gold are very distinct colors. Other reviews mention they are not. Maybe the set has changed. But mine is just like the photo. Very Silver and very Gold in pretty much any light. - Magnets strength is sufficient for car use and uneven surfaces. Not super strong magnets, but I can hold the set upside down and the pieces stay in place. Sure, they will fall if I shake the board. But I wasn't expecting super magnets. This balance of magnet strength also feels nice when moving the pieces. If they were any stronger, you would be lifting the board and need to hold the board down. I find the magnet strength just right. Cons: - Cheap China product. Yet this is exactly how the price is kept low and that makes it a good value. The thin edge around the board will be prone to snap at the corners. This doesn't affect the playing area. I actually wish those corners were rounded. Only one corner has snapped so far. - Doesn't really stay closed reliably. So we store it in the box it came with. To avoid this, I recommend a simple rubber band. Problem solved. So not much of a con here either. Neutral: - Good portable size. But some people may find a 9.7" board on the small side. At the price, size, and features; this is a great set. Especially if you are not sure the recipient will even like Chess. If you love Chess and want to spend a lot more money, there are plenty of better sets. The value of this set worked perfectly for me and my kids.

This is compact chess set is a super value with excellent quality pieces and board. Perfect for travel, and at a fantastic price point. I personally like the feel of the pieces, including the weight of as you feel the chess piece while making a move. Has a good feel which is important to me. I highly recommend this Chess Set and the seller.

I really like this chess set for my needs. My friends and I were just learning to play chess and we wanted a low cost, portable, yet nice looking chess set and this set meets our needs. Be advised that this is not a "high quality" product. The pieces and board feel cheap, but it's perfect for those who are either just getting into the game or looking for a portable set to play on the road that still looks nice without spending too much money. The magnets seem to work very well; they are strong enough to hold the pieces onto the board, even while upside down, yet are still effortless to remove from the board while playing. Honestly, the pieces are so lightweight and easy to lift that I sometimes forget that they are magnetic. The board is also labeled with 1-8 and A-H which are visible from both sides. This is great for not only easily announcing your moves, but also for writing down each move in the event that you want to start getting into more advanced chess playing. Overall, I think that this chess set is perfect for new/intermediate players and I have been very happy with it. As I continue to get better at the game, I imagine that I will eventually want to upgrade to a nicer and higher quality board. However, for the time being, this is perfect! Note: If you are a serious/advanced chess player, you probably would not enjoy this board. Advanced players would probably want to invest in a higher end chess board.

Nice looking set, magnetic aspect makes it great for travel. Downside is that the board can get dented pretty easily and no extra queens for pawn promotion.

Stores great! Fits all the pieces with a little extra room left. It feels like a normal chess board just a little slower because of the magnetic feature. It good when traveling because the chess board fold back and clicks together with the pieces inside. Just a good chess board.

Excellent quality plastic chess set. The pieces are very detailed and do not have any problems. They all have nice pads on bottom so it is easy to slide them across the board (except the cemetery where the board folds). Magnets are strong. The colors work really great with the colors of the squares on the board, which are jet black and metallic grey. The exact color of the grey can't be seen in the images because it has some reflective quality on them. In good lighting they will be very light grey. How awesome it could be if different colors would have been available for this set! Basically I can't think of any problems with this set so I'd call it almost perfect if not perfect. The imperfections would only be by design. Ideally I'd prefer to have the light squares to be less reflective. Perhaps a smoother center on the board in unfolded position would be nicer because then you could slide pieces across it. But that would be very hard to achieve. My one piece of advice is not to get sets smaller than this one. It is not the smallest available. It's a great size for limited space and portability. But you'll see that bigger will always be better if you have the space.

Mon fils est ravi!! L'échiquier est plus grand qu'il n'y parait et c'est très bien. Les pièces sont jolies, bien réalisées et le côté aimanté assez pratique pour deplacer le tout si on a pas fini la partie. Je conseille fortement ce produit...si on aime les echecs forcément 😉

PROS: - 24.7 cm x 12.5 x 3.9 cm when folded. It is small and will fit quiet nicely in a bag without taking too much space when travelling with it. - The pieces have a felt bottom which feels nice when sliding on the board. - The magnet works very well on all the pieces. All the pieces hang on the board without moving, on 90 Degree and 180 Degree test. - the magnet is not so strong as to be noticeable during a gameplay. - The pieces are made with fine details. - A really good value. CONS: - The inside storage could use a felt lining, in order to prevent the rattling of the pieces. - The rattle test on 90 Degree: The black king's magnet is slightly weaker, such that when the board is rattled, it will start to move don with gravity. - The hinges seem flimsy and easily breakable. - What keeps the board in the folded position are two interlocking plastic tips, which do their job in keeping it shut but I do not trust them to last. I would have preferred a proper latch on the outside to keep it shut. OVERALL: It is a well made portable mini chessboard for the travelling, and a good value.
