Honeywell Home RTH7600D 7-Day Programmable Touchscreen Thermostat

I am very satisfied with this 7-day programmable thermostat. The touchscreen interface is highly responsive and easy to navigate. Programming different schedules for weekdays and weekends is simple and has drastically helped lower my monthly energy bills. The display is bright and easy to read, even in low light. Installation was also very straightforward with the included instructions. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable, non-smart programmable thermostat!

I read every single review before buying this thermostat. The reviews made the smoke come out of my ears. A majority of buyers like this product. But a significant minority didn't. Among the complaints I noted: -- 1. You need to touch a button on the touchscreen to activate the back light, but this also activates whatever button you touch, whether you wanted to do that or not -- 2. Programming is indirect; you must use -- and therefore memorize, or use the manual as a reference for -- numerical codes to perform various functions. -- 3. The touchscreen is not responsive. -- 4. The touchscreen back light does not stay on for a sufficiently long period of time. -- 5. If left in default mode, the thermostat will start an hour or two early before the time programmed for a specified temperature to be reached. One thing to keep in mind is that the copious reviews of this popular product go back a good many years. In the interim, Honeywell may have upgraded the software or firmware, so that different reviewers often seem like they are talking about entirely different products. As a prelude, a note about me: I can't figure out most of the features on my non-smart cellphone. Enough said. Despite the fact that installation looks simple for do-it-yourselfers, I am of the pay-a-pro-to-do-it tribe. I was displeased to see that the old Honeywell vertically oriented manual thermostat that this new baby was replacing left unsightly marks on the wall not entirely covered by this new, horizontally oriented thermostat. If this sounds like you, be prepared. I must say that the very large number of negative reviews put me in a fearful state of mind. But this Honeywell worked exactly as described. So let me address the negative comments that caused me so much pre-purchase grief: 1. The touch of the touchscreen is my favorite feature on this thermostat. My primary experience with touchscreens is in grocery stores and bank ATMs. You have to give those touchscreen buttons a good assertive push. Not so with this Honeywell touchscreen. The merest touch sparks it to life. It's stupidly satisfying. Nothing other than the back light is activated by touching a button that activates the touch screen. You need to touch any button again to get that button to do what it is programmed to do. They are two distinct movements. 2. Numerical codes no longer exist. Programming is straightforward. It isn't intuitive in the least. You are presented with clearly labeled buttons. 3. This model thermostat has been around for several years. Perhaps its parts were upgraded without fanfare. But this is honestly the most responsive touch screen I have ever used. I actually only have to touch it, as opposed to the aggressive finger jabs ATM machines force me to use. Here, it's light-light touch-touch-done in about 5 seconds. You actually experience a ridiculous moment of pleasure that finally something works properly. 4. I'm sorry, I was too lazy to time it (I do have a life), but the touch screen light seems to stay on a good amount of time. I programmed an entire week day by day with no problem, although admittedly it wasn't in the dead of night, when some people apparently program their thermostats. Okay, I felt guilty, so I programmed the thing in pitch blackness. Well, except for the back light. No problemo. I will need to think of some totally dark situations when my thermostat needs programming so I can tax this cool feature to the limit, as we men are programmed to do. 5. If you leave this thermostat in default mode, if you specify that you want the house to be 72 degrees at 7 am, it may very well start your cooling system an hour or two earlier. From the manufacturer's perspective, this is a prime selling point of this thermostat: that it knows to start cooling your place earlier than you indicated to get the temperature to the degree that you indicated by the indicated time. This is actually not a defect. It's the single biggest feature of this device. If you don't like automation, you can turn it off. (Keep in mind that if you specify 72 degrees at 7 am, and the thermostat turns on your air conditioner at 7 am, your place may be 10 degrees hotter, which will take longer to achieve your desired temperature. If you have a good commute to work and are on a stopwatch from the moment you wake till the moment you leave, that's a factor.) If you don't know how to turn off this feature, Honeywell has very good technical support. There is no such thing as a non-ugly thermostat. This is pretty ugly too. Compared to the others, though, it's a lot less ugly. Life is a compromise.

This thermostat is the one to buy. There is no need to look at the thousands of other thermostats or read any other reviews. I've done all that for you. Who knew there could be so many products out there to do 1 simple thing - program & run your heating/AC unit. Understandably I'm not a HVAC tech. I'm just a homeowner that's living on SS, a small pension, rental properties, & royalties. I'm also single, BTW. Amazon has the 7600 at an awesome price. It was $20 more at Walmart & Home Depot. The RiteTemp thermostat I took out was starting to act like a stubborn old man; something I know a lot about. It never was easy to use. The programming was cumbersome. The ambient air temperature would vary widely. My 84 y/o dad, who can no longer understand even simple things, would try to work it. That was an event that would take me 15-30 minutes to fix. For that reason I bought the locking cover for the Honeywell 7600. I think sometimes technical writers think too hard about how their material will be read. They attempt to make it as simple as possible and wind up leaving out important but necessary imformation. The only hang up I had in installation was the instructions didn't say the wire terminals were not the type that cut through the wire's insulation. The RiteTemp's instructions explained that. When I wired the Honeywell in I wired it like the old one. Well the wires needed to be bare to make contact. The tech info should also say in BOLD HUGE PRINT to mark the wires as they are on the old thermostat before disconnecting. I already knew to do this so it was easy to install. It was not in their instructions. It is totally programable from the touchscreen and this is where the writers did a good job. They made it cookbook-like steps. Just don't be intimadated by the codes. They are like measurements in cooking: teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, quarts... and putting in the ingredients at the right time. Now that the new thermostat has been controlling the heater for a few months, it really shows its superiority. It keeps the temperature even. That 84 y/o I mentioned above needs the house very warm. With all the functions programmed by the touchscreen screen, he can't mess with it. Actually, the locking cover key can be left in the lock because he can't figure out how that works. You want a thermostat to do it's job without thinking about it. That's what the Honeywell 7600 does. It is the One to Buy.

I purchased this thermostat to replace a 20 year old (original) mercury analog thermostat for our upstairs unit. The main reasons I chose this unit were price, features, brand name and overall reviews (touch screen was desired but not mandatory). IN THE BOX: The package came with everything necessary for installation, including wire flags to mark each wire with before you pulled them off the old thermostat so that you could more easily identify where they go into the new one (a very nice touch). The thermostat was, of course, included along with an installation manual and a user's manual, and a couple mounting screws with wall anchors. INSTALLATION: We have a gas furnace and ac, so for us it was a four wire job (no flags were even necessary). It couldn't have been any simpler to mount and wire. If you have an electric furnace w/ emergency heat and/or a multiple stage unit your installation will be more involved, but if you take your time and flag the wires it still shouldn't be overly complicated (if you don't feel comfortable doing it, it's better to get a professional to do the job - please don't risk messing up your several $K system). The installation manual is pretty clear, however I can see a few places where a bit of confusion may arise for those who have never installed a thermostat before. Overall, this thermostat is just as easy to install as any other thermostat on the market (they're all pretty much the same), if not a touch easier due to the thoughtful inclusion of the wire flags. SETUP: Read the manual!! Sorry, I had to get that out of my system after seeing many of the unfounded poor reviews on here from people who claim this thermostat is unable to do things that it actually is able to do, if they had just taken the extra couple minutes to flip through the pages in the user's guide... With that said, setup is a bit of a mixed bag - it's pretty easy to setup, however you MUST read the manual in order to set certain functionality, as it is code driven (the unit uses a numbering system to select functionality, and you must match the number up to that in the manual to select what features you want to activate / deactivate). Fortunately, once you set it up once, it's good to go. It could be a bit more intuitive, but to be honest, I thought the manual was easily understandible and I had no problems with the setup. The one thing that did bother me a bit was the fact that the date can only be found and changed under the numbered setup, instead of being programmable with the time under the 'normal' screen setup. I guess this should only have to be set once, though, so it's not really THAT big of a deal in hindsight (just a bit frustrating at the time). PROGRAMMING: Programming could have be bit more intuitive in my opinion, though it isn't difficult (and you don't have to do it often once you get it set where you want it While the manual wasn't required for me to do this, it would have probably been helpful on my first run. This thermostat has individual daily settings, each with four time slots for when you sleep, wake, are away, and return home, and each slot with their own high temp and low temp range (the thermostat can be set to change over from AC to Heat, or vice versa automatically as necessary in the setup codes, though we kept ours manual). You can select multiple days at once to program identically, which is a nice feature and saves a bit of time. Overall it's not difficult, however it was just a bit more tedious than our downstairs unit (a higher end non-touchscreen thermostat from another make). SCREEN QUALITY (TOUCH AND VIEW): The screen is easy to read, well lit and thus far I have experienced perfect touch sensitivity. The green glow may be 'outdated', but it does a nice job illuminating and we purchased this thermostat knowing that's what it had, so I don't understand why some other reviews have even mentioned that as a gripe... It's nice that you can touch the screen once anywhere in the 'touch sensitive' areas (along the bottom and right side) to light it for viewing, then touch it again to change settings. This seems like it should be a given, though I've dealt with touch screen units in other homes that require a touch it to light it, however that first touch changes settings at the same time). The buttons are large enough for me to comfortably navigate without worrying about hitting the wrong button or multi-button pressing (I have good sized hands). FUNCTIONALITY: The thermostat has worked very well for us thus far. We haven't had any of the constant cycling on/off issues that have been expressed in other reviews, however I installed it in late September so we missed the really hot season; we'll see how it does as it begins to get really cold now. I am not worried about it though - it keeps us comfortable and does exactly as it has been programmed to do. The temperature is also a LOT more accurate than our previous mercury model... MATERIAL / BUILD QUALITY: Overall the quality of materials is good. The plastic housing is a bit flimsy - once mounted on the wall the thermostat still has some give and play, though it's sufficiently stiff as to not allow movement during regular button pressing and such, and the electric contacts seem to be firmly in place. After I installed the thermostat, I did notice that the screen was not positioned correctly. It seems that the screen is held into place using just the pressure from the cover. I was able to use my thumbs and gently slide it back into the proper position, and it is held firmly enough so that it shouldn't be a future issue (unless handled somewhat roughly), but it does seem that they would have secured it better with clips or something. OVERALL: For the price of this thermostat (keep an eye out for the dicounts) it is practically unbeatable, and I have no gripes or regrets purchasing it. We wanted a simple second zone therostat with daily programming and at least two time slots per day. I did my research, and the Honeywell RTH7600D has met or exceeded all of my expectations so far. While setup requires the manual, you should only have to do it once. Programming takes a bit of getting used to, but once you do a few slots it's pretty easy. The touch screen is sensitive and well lit. Functionality is exactly as it should be. This has been a great unit for us, and it's certainly nice not having to slide the temperature adjuster every morning, then slide it back right before we go to bed (and wait for the temperature to get back into a comfortable range).

I bought this thermostat to replace a Chinese manufactured home depot touch screen special that was about 5 years old and failing. This unit is about the same size and lined up just right to cover the old holes as I made new holes for this thermostat. The wiring of my system is basic and that was quite easy to transfer over to the new thermostat. The only problem I ran into was getting the back plate off the thermostat. A quick call to their support line for a simple answer on how to separate it solved that problem. I just didn't want to start forcing it off and break something and it is not listed in the instructions how to separate the plate. The plate is very secure to the wall and the unit snaps on top of the back plate. It has a little bit of wiggle room and at first I thought the wiggle would be an issue for me but I don't notice it all now. I figured out how to program it without reading instructions. At first I thought I was going to need to ready them but it turned out to be a bit more intuitive than I first thought. I will still go back and read to see what features and options I might have missed but this is a pretty simple thermostat to use which is perfect for us. I never had to walk my wife through using the device. She started to figure it out on her own as well. She is pretty good at figuring things out so your experience might be different. I think I've noticed (anecdotal, not scientific by any stretch of the imagination) our systems runs a bit more efficient now. It does not cycle too much (flip on and off frequently) and it also does not run for an hour at a time. It seems to come on, run for a short while then click off and the temperature is more consistent. Do your research. I know some units track and understand the behavior of the house and know when to turn on and off to maintain a temperature. I am not sure if this is one of those types of units. I would definitely buy this again. The product was shipped and delivered quickly. Very happy with the order processing. All around this has been a good purchase and I recommend it.

We recently bought a house with a 1 stage heating/cooling system. It came with a very old honeywell thermostat (probably 20 years old) but still worked like a charm. We wanted something that is more modern and looked around. Our first choice was nest thermostat, with all infatuation about its appearance (just like any other apple product). At the end of the day, I was prepared to spend $250 towards a thermostat! (they did their marketing very well)). I read the reviews a little closer and noticed long term users complaining of wifi issues, no control over push firmware upgrades, waking up to a cold/warm house, etc. Most positive reviews were from folks who had it for less than 3-6 months. No one could comment on their longetivity or whether the company was going to remain in business 3-4 years from now. With all these doubts in mind, we went for our trusted brand honeywell (and saved a lot of money). While this particular model does not have all the bells and whistles of nest, it works just as fine (if not better). It came with all the necessary instructions, mounting screws, dry wall spacers, stickers for labeling your wires, etc. Took me less than 3 minutes to install and get it running. Programming is easy. All you do is set current time on the clock and then go to schedules. You can select multiple days at a time if required. Then you set your desired temp. Each day is divided into wake, leave, return and sleep periods. So can program 4 diff temps daily. This thermostat does not have an auto switch filter from heat to cold (which might be a necessity for some down south) but up here in Indiana, switching from one mode to another is just one finger press. I'm not sure about the amount of savings it will bring to my electricity bill cause this is the first thermostat in our house. Pros: 1) easy to install 2) cheap but well built 3) programming is easy (took me less then 5 minutes to program the entire week) 4) backlight is a nice thing to have in the dark 5) Reminder to change air filter Cons: 1) wish it had hourly programming like the nest thermostat 2) Does not have automatic fan feature. It' either on with AC or manually on. Would be nice to have (to save on some electric bills)

I bought this thermostat last April to replace my 22 year old Honeywell thermostat that just gave up. I thought I'd buy this based on the amount of good reviews, the price and my experience with Honeywell products. Most Honeywell products I have purchased have always been trouble-free for many, many years. I should have done a little more research on this particular unit....but live and learn I guess. The thermostat arrives and everything seems to be in order. Installing this thermostat is nothing short of a nightmare. The directions were fairly straight forward, but the connections labels are misleading and the jumper wire is a very cheap microscopic c-clip that can fall out if you're not careful. Mine did, and it took a better part of 45 minutes to try to find in the carpet. Once I verified everything was connected correctly and had new lithium batteries installed. I turned the power back on to the HVAC system. The minute I touched the thermostat to turn the heat on, it went blank. It came back on 30 seconds later only to go blank again. I took it back off and cleaned the wires thinking maybe they were a bit corroded and not making a good connection. I did that and it seems to work fine after that.....or so I thought. Setting the programme schedule wasn't too difficult although it took many more steps than I would have liked. The programme schedule worked fine....as long as the thermostat was on. My problems really started in the middle of Summer. I don't run the A/C that much so I would have the unit turned OFF. The minute I touched the thermostat to turn the A/C on, it would go blank. If I got it to work and left it alone using the programme it worked but it never seemed to register the correct room temperature, but the minute I touched the controls to adjust or turn off/on, it went blank. I called a service company out to check to see if there was a fault in the system that would cause the thermostat to power off and they couldn't find any. The tech tried to turn the A/C on and it went blank on him as well. While it was blank, he verified that there was power going to the thermostat and said this was a bad thermostat and suggested I try a different manufacture as Honeywell units are not very reliable anymore. I yanked this unit off the wall and bought a White-Rodgers unit that had a lower price and has performed flawlessly since.

I got this to replace my aging LUX Smart Temp TX500 programmable thermostat (the controls on it are not working well anymore). Installation for me was dead simple. I have steam heat, so there are only two wires to hook up. You need a fairly small flat head screwdriver in order to turn the little screws that clamp in the wires though. I like the 7 day programability, my schedule is different on Friday and the weekends, so it's nice to be able to set it differently for those days. It's not too hard to program either - duplicating the schedule for other days is a bit odd, but I think it's still easier than the lux. The display is nice and big, easy to read. It has a backlight so you can read it at night. You tap the display once to turn the backlight on, and then again to do a function. Overriding the preset temp is a bit odd, you press the up/down arrows, and the new temp starts flashing. If you leave it, after a few seconds it applies the new temp. It's a bit weird to get used to though, the LUX would apply the new temp as soon as you hit the button. The smart response tech works pretty well. When I come home at 6, the temp is exactly at 68, just like I set it. However, it is not all perfect. As I mentioned before, I have steam heat. That means big clunky radiators that stay hot for quite a while after the furnace turns off. The thermostat turns the heat off when the temp reaches exactly 68. However, the radiators stay hot, so the temp will continue to climb to about 70. This is annoying because it means the temp will have to drop by at least 2 degrees before the thermostat will kick in again, and probably drop another degree before the radiators get hot, and then repeat the same cycle all again. I was expecting the thermostat to be smart enough to figure this out, and turn the heat off before 68 so the temp would remain more consistent. Every thermostat I've ever owned had this issue. Overall this is not a bad thermostat, but it didn't work perfectly in my application. It still works well enough that I didn't return it, but I was a little disappointed. I may try one other setting to see if it makes any difference (I have it set for "steam" but maybe it'll work better on the default of "gas boiler").

For those without a "C" wire, this Honeywell 7-day programmable touchscreen thermostat is an excellent choice out of the seemingly countless number of thermostats available in today's society. We had an 11 year old push button type of Honeywell thermostat, and decided to update it with this one. Installation was super simple. First, make sure you turn off the electricity to the thermostat (no need for an electrical injury). Remove the old thermostat, but first record where the different colored wires fit in with the configuration on the panel where the different wires connect. I took a photo of the setup for easy reference. With the new back-plate, secure it on the wall, then connect the four wires to their proper installation points on the terminal. They corresponded exactly to the same lettering in the old unit. Make sure to place fresh batteries into the front plate. Snap the front plate into position. Turn on the electricity. Program the new thermostat to the temperatures you want throughout the days of the week. We like the touchscreen because it is sleek, without any protruding buttons. If we did have a "C" wire, we would have purchased a similar-looking thermostat that would be able to take advantage of the features that utilize the "C" wire. This thermostat has a default display of the temperature in Fahrenheit. We live in Canada, so we wanted the temperature to be displayed in Celsius. This was easy to do, and is explained in the instructions that come with the thermostat.

Ive had this for a few months now. It worked originally but now does not come on at all. Very disappointed. Waste of money

Liked everything about this programmable thermostat! It was easy to install, the manual was clear and easy to understand and it is still working!! This is the second programmable Honeywell I tried with our furnace, the first one only lasted a week before it packed in totally. The whole thing just quit! So, it went back to the store. Left it for a while and then saw this on Amazon, checked out the reviews and thought I'd give it a try. It still works and retains its programming through multiple power-outs that we have in our rural neighborhood. Yep, I'd definitely recommend it!!
