This is the second one that I have purchased that will not hold a charge. Why?

Ive had the same issue with mine, which I purchased in February 2016. I managed to put a support under the cable input into the base to keep it green and charging. Having problems again since I returned from a 2 week vacation and the problem has started up again. Just read about someone using their phone charger and exchanged out the cable with a similar head and its green again!! Let's see how long this lasts.......

why does the light comes on in middle of night

This is a total waste of $200. It turns on in the middle of the night when I walk past 5 feet away. When I’m standing in front of it to put on make up it won’t turn on without putting my finger over the sensor. And with that still doesn’t stay on.

Can you purchase a recharger for the mirror?

Plug the Simplehuman mirror in to your IPhone charger. I was about to pitch mine since it’s old, but thought I’d try my IPhone charger and it worked

Is there any magnification ie 8 or 1?

The magnification is only 5X on the 2021 version. I'm very disappointed and may return for a 10X. It's difficult to see close up when tweezing eyebrows.
