The original edition of this book, long out of print, was published almost 20 years ago. The decades since then have brought enormous changes to the business side of moviemaking, requiring that the new edition be totally rewritten. This is, then, a brand new book and one that has been most eagerly awaited. In it, three experts in entertainment law carefully explain the complex procedures involved in bringing a film to the screen, from acquiring rights and financing, to negotiating workable agreements with artists and craftspeople, to distributing and exhibiting the finished motion picture. Clear, concise, and โ above all โ authoritative, this book cuts a pathway through a jungle and is an essential reference for the teacher of film, the independent producer, the would-be filmmaker, and anyone interested in the business of making movies. Review: Great book with printing error - The content is great. But the printing company or the publisher made a critical mistake of forgetting pages 60 and 61 from the book. So, the book jumps from page 59 to page 62. What a shame. Review: Thank you - This order was such a long time ago I don't even remember if it was good or not but I do remember reading it so thank you

A must for first time producers
Being a first-time independent producer I had little knowledge of all the legal elements involved in movie deal making. I must say that even though at first this book was a little difficult to understand, given the nature of some legal terms used, it has been essential to get a clear picture of everything that must be covered to ensure proper production, financing and distribution of any film project. The book doesn't go into detailed forms or explanations of complex contracts. It does, however, highlight the most important points of views on both sides of the negotiating table so you're better prepared when taking part either one. Furthermore, there are basic rules of thumb that will allow you to understand key business aspects and demand more from your legal advisors when making contracts for the entire production process (from development through distribution). I went on to buy "The Independent Film Producer's Survival Guide" to analyze specific forms and contracts and other legal elements in further detail, but this book is definitely the starting point!!

Great condition for being used
The book looked like new and did not have stains or other wear signs. The price was really good, and it arrived in time without any delays.

Comprehensively... OUTDATED
Be warned about this book. Not only is it outdated, a huge portion of the book does not apply to most independent producers. For example, it dabbles in legal talk about financing and distribution contracts and dealings with studios and banks -- two that are almost never going to happen for most people who are buying this book. It just gives out information without considering it's functionality in the independent market. Don't buy this book. Get a more efficient and realistic book about the independent production process. It just explains and explains without giving any examples or sample contracts. What a waste of money.

In depth yet confusing
It offers steps you have to meander through to get the message. It offers realistic scenarios and offers possible steps afterwards. It you know legal jargon and can doublespeak, this book will not be a challenge.
