Does the green knob need to be removed in order to disconnect the battery?

Not removed. Simply screw tight to engage battery use and loosen to disengage. The green knob can not fully be removed or misplaced.

What kind of metal is this made out of?

It is made of cast zinc, plated with a thin layer of a yellow metal that is similar to brass or bronze. Cast zinc can easily crack under stress as a few reviews mentioned it.

Should the be mounted on the positive terminal or the negative terminal?

Must be installed ONLY ON THE NEGATIVE terminal of the battery!!! The reason is safety. The positive terminal has a red plastic cover to protect against accidental shorts which can be very dangerous. The negative terminal does not have a plastic cover because if it shorts to a grounded metal part nothing would happen. If you install it on the positive terminal, you will have exposed metal that can accidentally be shorted. Hope my answer also provides the reasoning such that a user will understand the “why” not just the “how”.
