Great for portraits and close-up shots, good beginning prime lens
Disclaimer: I'm an amateur photographer and purchased a Sony a6000 several months ago with the 16-55mm kit lens. I quickly graduated from the kit lens, however, and really wanted to unlock the power of my new camera. After debating between Sony's prime 35mm and 50mm, I settled with this bad boy first. I can't say this is my go-to lens that I leave on 90% of the time, but it definitely fills a specific niche depending on the situation. Thanks to its relatively low f-stop of 1.8 compared to the kit lens, it's great for portraits. Even at around f/2.5 to f/2.8, you still get that creamy bokeh in the background with nice subject isolation. To justify its $300 price tag, however, I've used it for other situations. As a Yelper Elite, I'm constantly that camera dork who takes pictures of every restaurant entree I order before shoving it away voraciously into my mouth. With that said, it operates well when taking close up shots. Extreme shots of insects, flowers, etc. would be better justified with a macro lens, although you can consider a cheap alternative from Meike (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BXZ9ALQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) to turn this 50mm into a quasi-macro lens. I've also used it occasionally for street photography, although its large focal length makes it cumbersome to use indoors. You can't really zoom out with your feet once your back hits the wall, ya know? In these particular situations, I will use the 50mm hands-down. Is it the most versatile lens? No. That's why I also have Sony's 28mm f/2, which I find myself leaving on my camera most of the time. In hindsight I would have purchased my 28mm prime first, given its practicality. However, the 50mm acts as a great sidekick with the kit lens and should eventually find its way into your camera bag, regardless of when you purchase it.

Bokehlicious
Bought for portraits on my a6000. I like the focal length for portraits. Where this lens really shines is outdoor and low light. Some will say it's not sharp enough wide open, but I've found it more than adequate at f1.8. It blows the kit lenses out of the water. Very sharp and very useful. The only negative reviews I've read say that it doesn't zoom. LOL. It's a prime lens. You zoom with your feet. Great bokeh. Very sharp. Affordable. Unless you're a pixel peeper, you'll find it to be a very good lens.

Every A6000 Owner Deserves To See What This Lens Can Do!
I bought this to use on my new Sony A6000 camera and I have to say its totally blown me and my wife away at how AWESOME the pictures are coming out. Honesty the combo is producing endless stunning photographs and the image quality is 3D like and super sharp. The Kit Lens is something you will not want to use after seeing the image quality difference this camera provides. This lens will get you that awesome blurred background and foreground effect that everybody loves normally see when they pay a professional photographer to take their family or personal photos. If you have a Alpha 6000 camera then this is a must have lens. I was looking at the Zeiss 55mm prime also which has the highest rating as far as quality image goes on DXO Review Site goes for the best prime lenses on the Sony A6000 specifically but it also has a $1000 price tag which really didn't stop me from buying it if i thought it was better but the lack of OSS "Optical Image Stabilization" which helps improve night shots and prevents video distortion was what made me buy this lens instead. I never leave reviews normally due to time restraints but I have to urge A6000 camera owners to please buy this lens for your camera if you want to really make the A6000 spit out superb high quality photographs that when taken right will need zero editing.

YES, FAST IN LOW-LIGHT , but slow to pan-focus ??
Noticeably sharper than my 1650PZ, and incredibly faster in low light, so it is probably a keeper. However, it seems to take longer than the 1650 to acquire focus when panned to a new scene at a different range. I don't know the technical parts of photography, or at least not too much about lenses , but I am disappointed quite a bit by this. I might understand if it was only happening at f1.8, where the focal plane is very shallow, and the mechanism takes so time to acquire a "fix".....?? See, I told you I didn't know much. Very tough to keep focus where you want it with this lens, even if you have set it at overall f8.0 in the A mode. Will pick the front , then the middle next time, in a complex scene. Got to admit, it does some really nice portraits of my kids and pets, with the background out of focus. The low light ability gets no-flash pics at about 3 times the shutter speed of the 1650... Great macro shots, too, by cropping a shot made from about 15 inches away. Again, on those macros, you have to be very careful, using flexible spot focus to pick a blossom out of the leaves behind it.

APSC reminder
Great lens, but if on an A6000, keep in mind that 50mm in a crop sensor is not a 50mm field of view. Equivalent to 80mm telephoto.

Great Store!
Fantastic lens. Great store too. I am glad I bought used. Half the price and came with lens filter and some cleaning supplies. Highly recommend the store for future used gear purchases. The item literally is mint.

“Excellent optics, especially if you’re just starting in this field!”
I bought this lens about two years ago; it was my first lens, and I truly have no regrets. I did almost all my initial projects with it. If you’re just starting out, I recommend it 100% for both video and photography. Keep in mind that it can be challenging to use in tight spaces, as you need a certain distance depending on what you’re focusing on. The most positive aspect for me is its quality and brightness, as it has an aperture of F1.8. Additionally, its focusing speed is quite good. The only downside for me has been the chromatic aberration in certain situations, but it still remains one of the best.

Really a good beginner lens. I've paired it with my ZVE10 and it works brilliantly, the Boken is so creamy and sharpness is great in comparison to my old kit lens. Though this lens has some amount of chromatic abrasion green and pink hue here and there but it to the untrained eye it won't make much of an issue. Auto focus is super fast. Subject seperation is also very good.

Good lens for all kind of photoshoot but very pricy.

it's an awesome lens for the price. but check it carefully. mine had a small thing like a lint inside the lens under the front glass. there is no way it can be cleaned. such a shame.
