Does a great job!
I love this hand vac! It holds a charge for a good period of time, and I tend to use it in small bursts as I see the need. It has, in my opinion, excellent suction. It sucks up pet fur, sewing threads and most miscellaneous dust, insects, and lint. It seems durable, but I take care of it. It's easy to carry around; it's heavy enough to feel strong but light enough for easy carrying around. The cost was reasonable & competitive. I'd had another corded brand for about 30 years & hated to get rid of it, but this is a good replacement & I'm very happy with it.

Two years later... still going strong
Purchased in Nov 2012, writing a second update, now in April 2015. This Dust Buster keeps on going. Still holding a charge VERY WELL and has not lost an ounce of suction power. I'm planning to add another one to the garage, and possibly adding more so that there is one on each floor of the house. Really amazing design and usefulness. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Purchased in Nov 2012, writing this review in Jan 2014. Its my first video, but of all the products I've reviewed on Amazon, this one deserves an extra star. We had a Black and Decker Dust Buster when they first came out (sometime around 1987). You would charge it up, and right after it got off the charger, it could suck up sawdust, but the battery would drain quickly, and suction power would lower until it barely made a noise and you couldn't feel the air moving into it. The Lithium Ion battery changes all that. When it is on, it is on at full blast, with the ability to suck up everything that fits in the tube. I've run it hard over the past year, and about 60 seconds before the battery dies, I can hear the sound reducing and you know it is almost out of juice -- That has only happened when I intentionally left it off the charger overnight in my garage in sub-freezing temps, then was doing woodworking and turned it back on to clean up a huge mess of sawdust. When it is out of juice, it just plain turns off. Much more satisfying than slowly sucking at lower power. But with day-to-day use, and always putting it back on the charger, I've never had it run out. What you WILL find with this dust buster is that your home vacuum gets used a lot less. :) This thing is about as addictive as a power washer. Once you turn it on, good luck putting it down; it is so satisfying to use and works so well, that I inevitably work around the room I'm in and suck up everything else I see on the floor, surfaces, baseboards and so on. In fact, while I was thinking about this review, I was trying to remember a time where I only vacuumed up the ONE THING that I was planning to suck up, and couldn't remember a time where I DIDN'T go around and clean up other things. It really is fun to use and the house is just naturally cleaner as a result. When you have the right tool for the job, any job can be fun, and this is the absolute right tool for the job. Right now I'm saving up to add one to the garage and other to the basement so that I always have one close at hand. Our upright vacuum now only comes out when we want to do the deep cleaning, about once a month. I use it for cleaning up spills while baking, cleaning up the table (chairs and floor) after the kids eat, I suck lint off the couch, clean up sawdust in the garage, suck up ash from the fireplace, suck up paper cuttings and stickers the kids leave on the floor. The list goes on. Another thing I have to mention is how easy it is to disassemble and clean. The filter system is great. I'm only now looking at replacing the filters, though I probably should have done this every six months. I keep it very clean by emptying the container, but also taking apart the filters and rinsing or brushing them out. I've seen a lot of vacuums meet ash or sawdust and immediately spray particles in the air, but this vacuum does not. It does an amazing job of containing very fine dust particles, which in turn raises your confidence to suck up anything and everything you see. The only two things anyone in the world could complain about are the noise and the LED light. I throw out both of those arguments as pointless, but I'll address them. The noise is loud. In the video you'll see that it gets up to 98 decibels. That is louder than conversation, about as loud as a Subway. The pitch of the noise is probably what some people object to. It has a higher pitch noise - closer to a weed whacker than a Harley - but the decibel level is what I'd expect for truly awesome suction power. The other thing people complain about is how bright the LED is. I'll give them that. It surprised me. You can see the blue glow outside the window of our kitchen. But if this does bother you, get out a Sharpie or some model paint and put a couple of dabs on it to either block or diffuse the brightness. Neither complaint should hold you back from getting this thing. If I had to choose this or an upright vacuum I'd choose this, or two of these. UPDATED 2/16/2014: It looks like you can replace the batteries if they ever die. Not easily, but if you have a multimeter and you really wanted to, the batteries are easy to get out and are stored in a nice battery pack. I uploaded another video to YouTube here: [...]

Efficient and convenient
As others have said, this a great little machine. Excellent suction. Easy to use. My only complaint is the need to recharge often. Other than that, I wish I’d bought it ten years ago. 4.5 stars

Long Term Review (6+ years) of B&D CHV1410L Cordless Vacuum
UPDATE: It is now 2019(!), and I have been using this vacuum for 6 years now. It still functions, and I am still using the original filter. Nothing has changed from my original review, there are still things I would like to change about this product (specifically the way the top locks - or doesn't lock - into place consistently) but the fact that I have gotten 6 years of use out of a handheld vacuum is unprecedented so far for me so I am happy to overlook that flaw. No broken parts, battery still holds a decent charge (I get about 20 minutes of uninterrupted vacuuming out of it at this point, which is more than enough for small cleanups), and the vacuum basically functions as it did when I purchased it. This appears to be a solid product with a reasonable price point and proven durability, so it still gets 5 stars from me. ______________________________________ Original review below: ______________________________________ After several negative experiences with other vacuums, I wanted to wait to do a long-term review of this product because, for me, how a vacuum cleaner holds up to prolonged use is more important than my first impressions. I have now been using this vacuum for 2 years, so I feel pretty confident in giving this product 5 stars (i.e. I love it, with a few minor nitpicks). Why I bought this vacuum: I wanted something to quickly pick up small amounts of debris without having to haul out the much heavier and more cumbersome upright vacuum. I keep it plugged into its dock in the main living area, so I can quickly grab it whenever needed. Things I love: After buying this vacuum, I got golden retriever puppy, so it's safe to say that about 90% of what I'm vacuuming up nowadays has some amount of dog hair in it. Even though I didn't buy this for handling pet hair, this vacuum handles it flawlessly. In fact, I frequently use it to grab up the stray tumbleweeds of dog hair that often migrate into the various corners of the house (pet people you've probably dealt with this before). You'll need something much more powerful to get the pet hair out of carpets and furniture, but for hardwood floors, tile and other hard surfaces, it works great. For those who don't have pets, there's still plenty of uses for this thing. I use it to grab stray crumbs on the kitchen floor in between deep cleanings. It's great at picking up small leaves and dirt that get tracked in near the doorways. During the Christmas season, this vacuum is my go-to for picking up the Christmas tree needles which inevitably end up scattered everywhere (much like the dog hair!) So, in summary, I'd say that the vacuum is absolutely great for cleaning small to moderate amounts of debris off of pretty much any type of hard surface. I wouldn't recommend using it to clean pet hair or debris out of carpets or upholstery, although it can do so, provided it's not embedded very deeply. Cleaning: The vacuum is bagless and can be disassembled into 5 pieces for cleaning which you can see in the photo. It's a pretty straightforward process since most of the pieces are plastic. There's a cloth filter which can also be cleaned or replaced, as needed. The filter pops out and can be emptied into a trash bin, the full disassembly is only required if you want to clean all the parts (I tend to do this after 2-3 times of just emptying the cartridge). After cleaning, I like to put a couple of drops of essential oils (peppermint, etc) on the filter, which gives the room a nice smell while vacuuming. So far the filter and all internal parts have held up well with only cosmetic damage from scuffs, etc. Cons: There's not much to mention here, but a couple small things worth noting: 1. The top of the vacuum cleaner is one solid piece that has to be clipped into the rest of the body of the vacuum. It can sometimes seem like it is locked in but, if you do not do this correctly, the end will fall off during vacuuming. This can be annoying, as you have to stop and re-attach it again. I'd recommend future models include a better locking mechanism, or at least something that holds together a bit better. 2. Battery life is good; however after 2 years of moderate to heavy use, I get about 10 minutes of solid vacuuming before the battery dies out. I'd say this represents an overall degradation of about 50%, given that, when new, the vacuum could handle about 20 minutes before needing a recharge. This is, of course, a rough estimation, and I haven't compared performance to other vacuum models, just something to be aware of. It doesn't bother me much given that I only use it for small amounts of debris and not for vacuuming the entire house at once. Who would I recommend this for? -Anyone who has hard floors or surfaces they want to clean, without the hassle of a full-size vacuum. -Dorm use -Studio apartments -People with pets who want a quick way to get hair out of their (non-carpeted) surfaces

The crevice tool is a neat feature built into it
This Dustbuster is perfect for those little cleanups both in the house and the car. It’s easy to empty and sits on its charger so that it is fully charged when you pick it up. I’ve used it for everything cleaning the car seats and mats to Little spills in the house so far it works great.

Game Changer
This is the best hand vac I have ever owned. The suction on this is very powerful, the brush just flips down for baseboards or whatever, you can turn the neck sideways for better reaching and it charges pretty quick. Emptying it is easy, just one button and the charging base is small enough to sit on a small shelf. I’ve owned Black and Decker before but this is a whole new level. Very impressive!

Outstanding Suction & Ultimate Convenience!
I am incredibly impressed with this little handheld vacuum! I bought it primarily for quick cleanups around the house and for detailing my car, and it has exceeded my expectations in every way. The suction power is fantastic for a cordless unit—it effortlessly picks up crumbs, dust, pet hair, and dirt from both hard surfaces and carpets. The design is brilliant; the rotating nozzle makes it incredibly easy to change angles without twisting your wrist, and the built-in extendable crevice tool means I don't have to worry about losing separate attachments. It gets right into tight couch cushions and car seat crevices perfectly. The charging station is another huge plus. It gives the vacuum a designated home base, keeps it neatly stored, and ensures it is always fully charged and ready to go when a mess happens. Emptying the dirt bowl is completely hassle-free and mess-free too. If you are looking for a compact, powerful, and reliable vacuum for daily touch-ups, this Dustbuster is worth every penny!

Better than most. Design, cleaning, and longevity issues.
If you don't want to read, here's the summary : It was an excellent vacuum for the first month, although there were some issues with the way the vacuum was designed. After about 2 months, the battery started going. Now, after having the vacuum for 3 months, it lasts for about half as long as it used to, the crevice tool is broken, and the vacuum's suction is only strong for about 10 minutes. Three months ago when I bought this, it was a great vacuum. Here were the perks : - Excellent suction - Doesn't blow dust out of the back - Easy to empty - Lightweight - Built-in crevice tool means you don't lose it, and it's easy to use (and clean). Great for getting underneath stuff Initial drawbacks : - The vents in the dust cup get clogged with dust immediately and are difficult to clean - The connection the vacuum makes with the charging station is precarious. You have to be careful to make sure it turns on and that it doesn't get jostled while charging. - The vacuum doesn't seem to last as long as it should (maybe about 30 minutes). When it starts to lose power, it takes about 5-10 minutes to fully die, but during that time it becomes increasingly useless, depositing anything larger than dust if you tilt it slightly while cleaning. Other vacuums I've had in the past remained powerful for a longer period of time before completely dying. - This vacuum doesn't have quite as much suction as the best handheld I've had, but it also doesn't blow half of the dirt and dust it collects out of the back of the vacuum while you're using it. It WILL, however, blow some dust out of the back, so don't put your face behind it. - Like every other handheld vacuum I've found, the crevice tool and nozzle will easily scratch a lot of soft surfaces like the top of large plastic bins and soft wood floors, desks, and countertops. You have to be careful with what you use it on. How I used this vacuum for the past 3 months : - Vacuum was used, on average, probably about once every week and a half to two weeks - When used, vacuum would sometimes be used for two sessions in one day, with about 3-5 hours of charging in-between. - Emptied vacuum when 1/2 to 3/4ths full - Tapped out dust cap each time - Scraped dust out of clogged vents in dust cap - About half the time, I allowed the vacuum to die fully before charging it fully. - Vacuum was constantly kept on the charger and usually plugged in. - Vacuum was used for light pickup - dust, dirt, flour, crumbs, small amounts of pet hair on upholstery, mouse poo...you get the point Here's my review after 3 months : - The crevice tool started to not click into place and the problem got progressively worse. Now it barely clicks, comes loose, and starts to slide into the vacuum during use. It seems to happen as a result of the crevice tool bumping into things. The connection just isn't very strong to begin with. The crevice tool only works well if you hold it so it's nearly flat against the surface. Otherwise, there isn't enough suction. - The amount of time the vacuum can be used for has decreased from about 30 minutes to about 15 minutes - The is only at its highest suction for maybe 10 minutes How this vacuum compares to handhelds I've used in the past : What's better : - Suction was almost as good as the best handheld I've had - Blew out far less dust than most, including the best handheld I've had - Easier to use than most - Better at getting into nooks and under things - Easier to tell when the vacuum is full - The curvature of the design makes the vacuum more maneuverable - The crevice tool makes the vacuum incredibly versatile - The vacuum is effective on upholstery and mattresses, unlike many What's worse : - The suction stayed powerful for a much shorter period of time, with a longer stretch of "sub par" vacuuming ability - The battery seemed less and less effective starting at two months, and now appears to be half as effective as it was when I purchased the vacuum - The vents on the dust cup clog almost immediately, causing unnecessary stress on the unit - The charging port does not make as firm of a connection with the device as other handhelds do - If the vacuum is bumped or jostled slightly while charging it will misalign with the connection. You'll come back hours later and it will still be dead. - The "click into place" aspect of the crevice tool wears down very quickly when the crevice tool bumps against things, and will eventually stop working - The hard plastic crevice tool scratches soft surfaces easily, and the brush attachment does very little. It's also very easy to accidentally angle the vacuum wrong when using the brush attachment, causing the bottom of the crevice tool to scrape against the surface. - The crevice tool does not have much suction or power, so you need to hold it almost flat against the surface you're vacuuming to get it to have suction, which makes it far less versatile. - After 3 months, this vacuum is no longer appropriate for cleaning upholstery Changes I would like to see : - Better connection with the charging station - Flexible rubber crevice tool OR a removable rubber cover for the top of the crevice tool - Multi-layered venting system for dust cup that can be easily disassembled for cleaning - UV light for inside of dust cup to kill dust mites and dust mite eggs - Removable and replaceable dust-filter attachment specifically designed for vacuuming dust. - Ability to use corded, or cordless - Longer-lasting battery - Suction that has more staying power (can probably be achieved by redesigning dust cup) - Free, cheap, or DIY battery replacement If you're anything like me, you wouldn't mind paying more for at least ONE handheld that had the POTENTIAL for some of these features, even if it doesn't necessarily come with them. I don't mind paying extra for my toppings, as long as toppings are possible. This could be a great product that really sets itself apart.

USA/Canada adapter needed if using in the UK
I love this Dust Buster ordered it as the 12 volt model which I already have seems to be no longer available. The only problem when it arrived was that it came with a USA/Canada two prong charger base and not the three pin which we use here in the UK, so I had to purchase the adapter suitable for USA/Canada appliances.

Excellent product!
This light weight ( only 3 lbs ) machine is very handy! I love that it has a pull out extended nozzle and little brush attachment that is attached so you will never lose its parts! It has decent suction and I mostly use it to vac my bedside "furry" carpets, dust bunnies and I use it a lot in the kitchen to suck up coffee grounds or crumbs. It is super easy to clean and love the reusable washable filter! One thing I have noticed is that when it is sitting on its charger the solid blue light ( for some models it is a red light) doesn't always come on which means it is not charging so I have to fiddle with it a bit. I haven't had it for very long so I will update in 6 months if there are any more pros/cons. **UPDATE JAN 7, 2025** I have learned that the "blue" light is on only when the vac needs to be charged and shuts off when fully charged! It lasts about 45 mins to 1 hour. Enough time for my daily clean to vac crumbs/coffee grounds in the kitchen, hair shed on the bathroom floor, vac all 10 area or runner rugs in my 7 bedroom house, to vac the exterior and interior filters on my air purifier and pine needles off my front porch. I love that it has its own charging base because it is always fully charged and ready to go! I wish my upright vac and my shop vac had this level of suction and ease of cleaning. I have not yet had to replace the disposable filter because it is so simple to clean out. I use an old toothbrush to simply brush it clean and the reusable filter catches most of the debris before it gets to the replaceable one. I literally use this every day, it even sucks up dust! It is by far my favourite addition to my cleaning tools and I have no idea how I lived without it at this point! (( I have been a professional cleaner on and off since the mid 80's)) I highly recommend this hand vac! I will review again if anything changes such as longevity! I hope it lasts for many years, it feels very durable! UPDATE Oct 22, 2025 Still working as new and these filters fit perfectly !
