Regarding the waterproofing -- how does it hold up in the rain? Do the contents stay dry?

The backpack is Water-resistant.It can hold a spill of water, or light rain shower. The times that it did rain and I picked up my son from school, the inside did not get wet. But I don't recommend using it in heavy rain.

Will this rolling backpack fit under the seat on an airplane?

Yes，it is fit under the seat on an airplane. I’ve traveled international flights with this backpack as my carry on.I under the seat ahead of me at my feet, and definitely in the overhead compartment no problem.

My son is in 5th grade he has to carry an extra pair of clothes. Does this backpack have enough space for clothing and lots of books?

Yes, it's such an awesome bag and very roomy. I also have a small 5th grader using this wheeled backpack for school，He frequently carries two suits of clothes and 5th grader books.Fortunately the side pockets are a good size to hold a water bottle. Being on school all day a water bottle is a necessity.Great value !

Length of telescope handle

The smaller version of this backpack that holds a maximum 15.6" laptop is 19.5 inches tall. The handle can be extended 21.5 inches further to a total length of 41 inches. It appears that the same handle is used in the larger size and higher cost version that holds up to a 17" laptop because the full length of the pack plus the extended handle is shown to be 41 inches for both backpack sizes.
