MagnetoSpeed V3 Barrel-Mounted Ballistics Chronograph Kit, Black, Hardcase

This is a great chrono. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? A qualified yes. This is work every penny if you: 1. Reload and use a chrono a lot. 2. Want the most accurate reading available on the retail market for less than thousands of dollars. If both apply then it is even a better deal. It is truly nice to be able to set up, adjust and take down a chrono without have to cease fire at a range. Heck, some ranges don't even let you use a traditional chrono. These are far more accurate and consistent that the light based chronos. You can use it in any light condition and even indoors. It is easy to use with a good menu system and simple controls, nothing to "techy". Data is saved in a standard CSV file that can be opened with any spreadsheet program like Excel. Had mine at the range yesterday and had a lot of interest, I may have even sold 1 or 2. Maybe MagnetoSpeed should give out referrals:) I also recommend getting the accessories for tapered barrels and the adapter for rail system mounts. This will help make sure almost any firearm you have will work. A final note is that MagnetoSpeed has great service and support. My original purchase had issues reading the shots. One call and they shipped a new bayo and all is well.

I really struggled to place this order. I am new to precision shooting after 50 years of shooting only at game. It is expensive but I couldn’t spend money on what looked like a much inferior product. Received my magneto on Monday and took it out today. The unit powers up once it is connected up correctly. There is no on and off switch. I started out and the first shot it read and looked good. Fired four more shots and looked at readout and I only had the first reading. Looking at the magneto it was obvious I didn’t have it strapped on hard enough. I readjusted it and continued to shoot the second string. No problems. Third string it was loose again. I reevaluated my setup and continued on for the rest of the shooting time with no problems. I like the function of the device. It is very intuitive to use if you have used a electronic device in your daily life. I’m 60 and it was very easy to use. The display is great and just amazing to see results, the averages, and standard deviation. It was easy to store results with the archive function. I look forward to many years of rifle ballistic tests to come. If this review helped at all please like it. If you read this far I give you one last tip to strap it to your barrel as tight as you can then tighten with thumb screw on bottom of strap lock.

Having used most chronographs on the market including the Lab Radar. This thing is awesome. You only need the instructions to make sure you put it on right, otherwise it is plug, play, and shoot. I have a suppressor on my .308 and it was a cinch to assemble and get muzzle velocity in minutes. The only thing I was careful about was removing it every ten shots or so to keep it from getting too hot. Lab radar is amazing for what it is but the three times I have used buddies or seen it used in a professional training setting, both the instructor and my buddies had to google instructions on how to set it up and use it. It is not as intuitive as this magneto speed

Very happy with this chrony. Yes it’s a little pricey but you get what you pay for. Really the only option when you are using a public indoor range. Mounting can be a little tricky, but once you figure out the right combination of spacers and it’s properly secured I’ve had no issues with it staying in position on my .308. I usually just mount the pick-up rail to a suppressor first and then attach the suppressor with the whole unit to my rifle. The display is pretty intuitive and easy to read even outdoors. So far I’ve put about 200 rounds over it and it has never failed to pick up a shot. Still running on the original battery over five sessions spread out over a few months time. Love the included hard case - keeps the unit safe and secure and slides right in to one of the external pockets of my Savior precision rifle case. Really the only negative is that the attached rail, although not all that heavy (the mount probably weighs as much as the pick-up rail), will affect barrel harmonics, so you don’t want to use chronograph shot strings to gauge accuracy or POI. Overall though I highly recommend.

Regardless of what type of chrono you use, there's a certain leap of faith required when it comes to believing the numbers. As far as I can tell, the Magnetospeed's velocity numbers are accurate since they are reasonably close to the data from powder manufacturers. I've had no trouble with the unit itself, although it is a bit finicky to set up especially if you have a tapered barrel. I ended up buying the tapered spacers that are sold separately. One star deduction for not including those inexpensive items with the chrono. I've found the easiest way to get the spacing right is to put the rifle in a vise at home then fool around with the spacer combinations until you get the 1/8 - 1/4" spacing. Then use the screws to attach the spacers to the chrono body before you go to the range. Makes it a lot easier than trying to do the whole setup at the range from a bench or mat. Another drawback is that the chrono slides forward slowly and eventually comes loose due to recoil. This is especially true with tapered barrels. Keep an eye on it and check the strap tension every few rounds. I've read where it changes the POI because of its effect on barrel harmonics and I believe it, but I only use it to get raw velocity data. My scope zeroing is done without the Magnetospeed attached. Other than the finicky setup and the movement due to recoil, the unit is easy to use and seems to give reliable information. A shooting buddy has a LabRadar and I'll be interested to see how the numbers compare with the Magnetospeed. All in all a nice product for way less money than the LabRadar.

I own a ProChrono. It wasn't working when I took it to the range; the lanes have an overhead cover that extends out for a good distance. I also own a winchester Model 94 (post '67) that I'm trying to develop some loads for. Didn't work well with the '94's front sight or frontband. I was able to get about six rounds trough it; every other shot I had to reinstall the bayonet sensor. That's on me. I don't think magnetospeed was thinking about the '94 when they designed their system. when it did work it performed flawlessly. Doesn't rely on overhead light and time consuming setup that shuts down all lanes. I'm sure I will get a lot better setup with rifles that don't have such a prominent front sight. I'll try to update after I get a chance to try it with a rifle with no obstructions to mounting. All in all I it looks like a well designed system.

I was pleasantly surprised by this little chronograph. It's convenient, packs into a small carry case for the range and it's crazy accurate. I got this to work up reloads and it's great. Mount it to a barrel, plug it in and you're off. No antennas to aim through, no weird calibration steps, just mount and go.

Ok it arrived today. Packaged very well. Ordered it yesterday. Super fast shipping I only paid $8 extra of course I get off work late and have about an hour before the range closed for dark so I read the directions quick grab my stuff and race to the range the hardest part is making sure you have the right clearance for whichever one you're going to use it on for the first time after that it's a piece of cake still only took me a few minutes I was slinging rounds down range quick just to see if it would actually pick everything up didn't have any issues so far seem to read dead on just like my competitionelectronics chronograph did except I didn't have to set anything up downrange or hold anybody up as long as there's no Hang-Ups down the road this thing is well worth the money although I do wish it was a little cheaper but you get what you pay for I guess it's a luxury and it's a lot easier shooting not have to worry about hitting any infusers on my old chronograph. The setup on this is very easy I think anybody can handle doing it just make sure you have the proper clearance mine came with a nice hard case everything fits in there nicely and there's enough spacers to adapt to pretty much any gun very cool product

For rifle use, this is the most reliable way to measure true MUZZLE velocity. I have had the privilege of running the MagnetoSpeed side-by-side with a Caldwell Pro chronograph, a Garmin Xero, and LabRadar all at the same time with some 20 odd rifles of varying performance and velocities. After an extensive session, with over 500 rounds fired, and the data collected and analyzed, the MagnetoSpeed was the clear winner. To clarify, the usual chrony has weather limitations and has the disadvantage of needing to move forward of a firing line to set-up (which can be a pain on public ranges). The Xero comes in second best, but is the most convenient by far. The real reason why the MagnetoSpeed reigns supreme, is that there was never ANY anomalies in the data. The LabRadar had too many anomalies for my liking, and is overly dependent on set-up parameters (including close by obstacles, walls, baffles etc.). Overall, it is hard to beat the Xero for convenience and accuracy combined, but when data accuracy is all that really matters - Magnetospeed is King! No extrapolated results, just true muzzle velocity.
