Slithering stoorworms, mischievious brownies, fierce kelpies and magical selkies -- these are the creatures of Scottish folklore. Award-winning children's author Theresa Breslin has collected the best-loved tales from all over Scotland. Retelling each in its own individual style, she presents funny tales, moving tales and enchanting fairy tales. Soar with the goshawk, dive with selkies and battle with the stoorworm, as each story is brought to life with exquisite illustrations by Scottish fine artist Kate Leiper, which brim with otherworldly beauty. A wonderful gift, this is a truly stunning book to be treasured for a lifetime and will be enjoyed by parents and grandparents as well as children. Longlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal 2013. Review: Buy them - Awesome stories and illustrations Review: Gorgeous - We have a lot of fairy tales books in our family library, and this book (along with its companions) has to be one of the most gorgeous. Itโs got sturdy, thick pages. The illustrations are minimal, clean, superb, exquisite - I will stop gushing now - they are easily some of my favorites illustrations ever. And then the stories... so fun. My kids love them, and theyโre fun for me as a grown up to read. The only thing I wish they could have included would have been a pronunciation guide for some of the trickier-looking names. But thatโs a small gripe. Overall, itโs an easy win. So happy we have these in our home.

Beautiful book with lovely tales
Loved this book. Purchased it for my son for his 7th birthday, and we read a story each night until we finished. I love that there are some illustrations, but not one on every page, because I feel it helps older kids strengthen their attention muscles, so we can start reading more chapter books. I will say my 3 year old only paid attention on the pages with pictures so that may be something to keep in mind if you have younger ones. I highly recommend this book to spark imaginations!

Very captivating book!
The stories are very entertaining and the illustrations are beautifully done. The binding is solid and should last a long time. So happy with this added to my library.

And it was a good choice. These stories are delightful and my girls ...
Eleven stories in 155 pages. These are Scottish Folk Tales. Actually I was looking for Irish Folk Tales to use for St. Paddy's day, but when I came upon these I decided I couldn't pass it up. And it was a good choice. These stories are delightful and my girls love for me to read from the book. I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because I was disppointed in the number of illustrations. The quality of them is quite good. but I was looking for an illustrated book with oodles and oodles of artwork. The illustrations here are often quarter page or one item on an otherwise blank page. Not a lot of detail even in the double fold illustrations. When it comes to children's books, I believe that the illustrations are as important as the text. I also was a little disapointed that the language of the book lacks the brogue I had hoped for. When I was a little girl, thre was an adorable little old lady who lived just down the road from my grandmother. She was Scottish from the old country. I could listen to her talk forever. I had hoped for some of that use of vernacular and was disappointed to find little of it. Some, but not enough. Still I would recommend the book.

Beautiful new book for our library
This is a well made and beautiful book which I couldn't be more tickled to have in my library. It has gorgeous illustrations, some of the pages are pastel (helpful for some neurodivergent eyes), the paper is thick and slick, the binding is great, and the hardbound cover is smooth and pleasant to the touch. This is one of those books a child can cherish and even pass on to their children.

Libro fiabe scozzesi
Bellissimo libro illustrato contenente fiabe scozzesi. Alcuni termini sono poco comprensibili se non si conosce la lingua, ma facilmente reperibili e intuibili.

A truly wonderful, magical book
I bought this book to read aloud to my 6 year old son and it's quickly become one of my favorite children's books. The beauty of the illustrations makes the book very accessible, while the well crafted writing holds the interest of readers of all ages. It is a book that feels both classic and modern, with adventurous characters of both genders that use cleverness to work through problems. I recommend this book for both boys and girls, but it is especially inspiring because of its portrayal of strong, independent female protagonists who assert their right to make their own life choices. I truly wish I'd had this book as a young girl, and hope that we see more books like this with positive role models for young women. I would also like to highlight the cultural contribution of this book- it is a wonderful resource for learning about Scottish legends and myths, and I think that readers familiar and unfamiliar with Scotland will appreciate this retelling of traditional Scottish tales. This book seems suitable to readers age 6 and up, but would especially interest boys and girls between 8 and 12 years old. The tales are magical and adventurous without being too scary.

Beautiful book! You'll want the whole series!
I have fallen in love with this series. I'm buying one per year for my favourite little person. The first one came from Scotland which was a heavy haul! Glad I've found them online. Beautiful illustrations and great narratives. A must for kids bookshelves.

Great bedtime stories
Bought the complete set of bedtime stories. The illustrations are beautiful and the stories are new to those of us not from the culture.

Classic tales, beautifully illustrated
I've been looking for something like this as a gift for my son for a while - there are a couple of really good Scottish tale collections, but none that are illustrated. Most of the stories in the collection are relatively well known (in Scotland at least) and newcomers to the stories will recognise similarities with other tales (for example, 'the wee bannock' is similar to 'the gingerbread man' and 'whuppity stoorie' is similar to 'Rumpelstiltskin'). There are ten tales altogether, plus one more to conclude the book. The illustrations are very beautiful, and there are very few text-only pages, so enough to keep the attention of younger children (my son is just under three). The overall presentation is very similar to the story collections published by Barefoot Books, which my son loves.
