OK, the max flow is 950, but what is the minimum volume to still have a good waterfall?

Thanks for your question. Anything less than 475 GPH will give a fairly lackluster flow. Since this particular bio-filter is so economically priced you could probably upgrade your pump and get this item for about the same cost as getting any biofilter / waterfall unit. Drill 2" hole in back of fountain box. Place in container. Fill with water. Will spillway work before container overflows?

Sure. The front lip is lower than the 3 side walls. There should be a connection hole already in the rear where the hose connects. No drilling needed.

Can i stack stone on it

Absolutely! I stacked stones around mine, bridging the top and even had some in the spillway. You can also put barley straw in the holding area, which makes a good filter.
