I thought it was a fault with the first adaptor, so then I thought it must be my laptop. After further research, I discovered this is a common phenomena with macbook pro's and USBC's. They use the same frequency or something (I'm not very technical apologies). What does work is either keeping your hand on it (not very practical) or covering the cable with tin foil. Crazy but it works! So once I'd worked all that out, the product works perfectly.
