Braun Unisex Watch AW10, Black, Strap

Love the classic design and not so big face.

I saw this watch in an exhibit at the Design Museum in London and really liked the style. The first watch I ordered arrived with a dead battery. A new battery didn't work so I returned the watch and ordered a replacement. The second one also had a dead battery with other flaws (see photos). The minutes hand is bent upwards and interferes with the seconds hand. There's also a large fiber in the dial at the 10 hour marker. Returning this watch as well. Very disappointed in Braun and their lack of quality control.

The face is small, 33mm. I wish it was 36, it would be more commanding. 38 might even be best. My seconds don’t fully line up form 06:00 to 12:00 like others but it’s slight and not the end of the world for me. The strap feels cheapish but appears to be nice leather and has a strong leather smell. Overall happy, just wish it was a hair bigger.

Meine bisherige Braun AW10 hat ihren Geist nach mehr als 25 Jahren aufgegeben. Ich hatte sie noch bei einem richtigen Braun-Fachhändler für DM 87,90 gekauft, den es heute leider nicht mehr gibt. Ein Neukauf, diesmal bei Amazon, war für mich keine Frage, auch wenn heute cirka € 200 aufgerufen werden. Nur interessehalber las ich die Bewertungen für die Uhr auf Amazon, die mich teilweise schon sehr erstaunten. Daher möchte ich einige Gesichtspunkte aus meinem Blickwinkel aufführen. Thema Design: Die AW10 ist ein Design-Klassiker der Braun-Designer Dieter Rams und Dietrich Lubs aus dem Jahr 1989, ganz im Bauhaus-Stil. Die Uhr hat einen Durchmesser von 33 mm und ist 7 mm dick, passt also perfekt auch an schlanke Arme. Die AW10 ist ein zurückhaltendes lässiges Statement aber eben keine Angeberuhr. Die Aufgabe war, die Zeit gut und schön anzuzeigen und sonst nichts. Wer dieses Design nicht liebt, sollte die Uhr eigentlich nicht kaufen. Thema Preis: Die AW10 war und ist immer noch "Made in Germany". Schon dadurch ist klar, daß sie nicht wirklich billig sein kann. Aber es sind immerhin Arbeitsplätze hierzulande. Thema Qualität: Die optische Ausführung = das Äussere ist perfekt, was vom Quartz-Uhrwerk leider nicht zu sagen ist. Es ist sehr leise, was schön ist, aber leider auch etwas ungenau. 10 bis 15 Sekunden Abweichung pro Monat muß man akzeptieren und dann eben nachjustieren. Das Lederarmband ist schön und filigran, hielt bei meiner ersten AW10 aber nur 10 Jahre. Da es eine Standardbreite von 18 mm hat, kann man es aber problemlos beim Batteriewechsel tauschen lassen. Die Original Braun-Dornschließen werden dabei auf das neue Armband übertragen und es sieht wieder gut aus. Daß meine alte AW10 nach 25 Jahren defekt war, will ich nicht entschuldigen, aber ich nehme es hin. Thema fehlendes Datum: Witzig fand ich die Bewertungen, die das Fehlen des Datums bemängelten. Die AW10 ist zum Design-Klassiker geworden, weil sie eben kein Datum hat, das die Schönheit stören würde. Sie können das wunderbar selbst prüfen. Von Braun gibt es auch Versionen mit Datum, z.B. die AW50. Die sind natürlich nicht von Rams und Lubs und werden auch niemals Klassiker werden. Wenn Ihnen eine dieser Versionen gefällt, dann kaufen Sie. Eigentlich hätte ich auch gerne eine Datumsanzeige an der Uhr, verzichte aber darauf, weil es die Schönheit des Ziffernblatts so sehr runterzieht. Aber das sollte jede/r für sich entscheiden. Zusammenfassung: Die AW10 hat das perfekte Design, das Uhrwerk hat eine gewisse Ungenauigkeit, das Armband eine relativ rasche Abnutzung. Es ist nicht die Uhr, die man für die nächste Generation hat. Wer sich aber, wie ich, jeden Tag freut, wenn er die finale optische Perfektion sieht, für den ist die AW10 genau richtig. Für alle anderen ist sie eigentlich zu teuer. Daher von mir fünf Punkte.

I'm working my way to getting a Max Bill watch and love Bauhaus. This is a watch that taps into that Lineage. Watched 3 or 4 reviews on YT, not overly favourable, before deciding I'll give the watch a go I really liked it right out of the box and think it's beautiful. It's 33mm which a lot of people don't seem to like, personally I love smaller watches, i grew up in the 80's and am a slim guy so it's perfect for me The watch feels quite elegant to me, and I think it really pops with smart/casual attire though it could do formal well. The lugs are pretty unusual if not unique, and I appreciate the watch for just being something different, lovely matt finish to them- I thought the watch may feel a bit industrial, but not so much in person. It's not a statement watch, it feels quite understated but the design just works, really really well. I love the seconds hand colour, quintisential Braun. Mine hit's the seconds indeces all on the nose. The price, is perhaps the most contencious aspect of the watch. Sure you can buy many other watches for the asking here, sure they may have better movement's etc But is that the point? Well not for me .. not really. I like the design and the watch keeps excellent time so I'm happy enough I think if you ever liked smaller swatches, nearest wrist presence I can think of or dress style watches of smaller size and the pictures of the watch appeal, definetly don't be overly put off by reviewers who will scream about how overpriced they are compared to a Casio etc (yes, they are!) But I have enough of those. Definetly have a look for an OG or give this a go it's lovely. It's unashamedly retro but still feels super contemporary as well imo. The Watch is still new enough, that I can't really say too much about the strap etc, but like it all so far. Will update should anything change my mind Thank you.
